A Xbox 360 is mine!
I just bought an XBox 360 off Craigslist for $20. It's broken, in that the DVD drive does not work, but it does not have the RROD. It doesn't come with AV cables or a power brick, but I should be able to pick up both for $30-$40. He is also throwing in a controller.

I pretty sure I can easily fix the dvd problem. It''s either a broken belt or a laser needs replaced, most likely. I should be able to fix either one. Plus while I have it open, I can make a few mods that should be able to prevent the RROD from happening.

I'm also just a giant dork when it comes to fixing video game consoles. I find it enjoyable in someways. I've opened and repaired the original NES, a PS1, a PS2, and the original XBOX. So it's about time I've tinkered with a next gen console.

Here's hoping I can get it working. If not I can probably sell it on E-Bay broken and get my money back. So at worse, I get to spend time tinkering on a 360 and sell it when I'm bored.

Yay for broken things on Craigslist!

You can buy manufacturer DVD drives for it for a replacement, last time I checked they were 40 or 50.. that way you wouldnt have to mess with anything on the inside of the drive, should just be connecting some cables.

I've found replacement drives for $30. When it comes to replacing drives in Xbox 360, it's not as simple as just plugging in a new drive.

The Xbox 360 dvd drives are link via a keycode to the motherboard they are shipped with. So to replace a bad drive you have to extract the security key and firmware from the bad drive then then flash the new drive.

Myself, I'm going to buy the replacement drive and just swap pcb controller boards. It's pretty simple since I already have the entire system tore apart.

The warranty sticker was already broken as well, where I suspect the previous owner attempted to get in the console but couldn't The case is pretty beat up and damaged. Broken clips and it's missing the eject button. I bet they had dropped something on the console and it crack the top of the case, denting the DVD Drive case, causing the drive not to open. They then tried prying it open, but failed. Then they tried opening the case and failed more. Eventually they managed to pry open the DVD drive, and ended up breaking the spindle for the DVD motor as well as a the belt and gear that opens the drive.

The guy ended up throwing in a AV cable as well so it was only missing a power supply. The System works fine outside of the DVD drive. So I'll end up spending probably $80 total and will have a functioning Xbox 360. And thanks to the free memory upgrade Microsoft is doing I have a free 512 Memory card on the way. So it's not a bad deal, and now if any of my friends have problems with their 360, I can fix them since I now know how to repair most things that could go wrong with a 360, including RROD.
